Who is the Enemy?

by: Robert J. Shelley ©2004

The screws here all got brand new para-military uniforms with flags emblazoned on their right shoulders, the field of stars to the right - a flag reserved for those of our troops on the front line of battle, you know, those kids giving up lives and limbs in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The screws got these uniforms right after the September 11 attacks while the country was scraping for cash and in debt from the fallout of the attack on America. The Commissioner thought his screws needed to look more intimidating and if spending one million dollars on para-military uniforms with flags, besmirching the honor of American troops overseas, might scare a few cons, so be it, one million to present a meaner image and disrespect the men and women in battle.

As a convict, I've always felt like the enemy, the country forgot we are Americans and take every opportunity to despise us but it took former Department of Correction in Massachusetts Commissioner Mike Maloney to make it official - and those flags remain flown in the position an honor only a combat soldier deserves.

Who is the Enemy? Is it me?
