Who Writes to Prisoners?
by: Robert Henry, Safford, AZ

Many people would never consider writing a prisoner. I would have never thought to do so when I was in the free world. Perhaps that is why I'm so touched whenever I receive a letter from a person who has seen my web site ad.

When I write to the people who respond to my ad, I share with them humorous stories about prison life. In each letter, I make an effort to write about something positive, humorous, and I make an effort to discourage people from making some of the same mistakes I have made in life. Many respond by telling me that they never expected such positive and humorous letters from someone in prison.

Having people on the outside who are so interested in learning from some of the mistakes I have made, certainly makes me feel that my stories and writings are worthwhile. I have established a few wonderful friendships as a result of placing my ad on the Friends Beyond The Wall web site. So in short, I thank my friends beyond the wall for doing such a tremendous job.

I have started a few wonderful friendships as a result of placing my "ad" on this web site and would like to share them with you:

Lisa, a college student, tells me that, initially her friends were shocked that she corresponds with an inmate, however, after she shared with them a few of the humorous stories of prison life that I have written, they now eagerly anticipate hearing "the latest story from 'her inmate.'"

Kim, a teacher, recently divorced and lost her father in an accident. Having also experienced this, we have been able to encourage each other. She writes that she is grateful to have someone to "talk to" who is so understanding.

Wendy, a nurse, loves to laugh about the pranks that I often write about. As a single mother, she faces the daily challenges of raising a five-year-old daughter, however, she enjoys sharing with me some of her more outrageous and humorous moments.

There is much to be said about a person who is willing to talk about his or her mistakes and allow others to learn from them. Write an inmate, you may be surprised with how open and honest some will be. You may find that you'll become far more comfortable "talking to an inmate" than you would have ever expected... you might just initiate a wonderful and lasting friendship.
